Extension Requests
Need more time to file? You can request a tax filing extension — but remember, an extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Remember the office must receive your extension request 15 days prior to any deadline, this allows us time to ensure proper filing and get your confirmation of extension request for your records.

If you expect to owe federal or Virginia tax, it’s important to make an estimated extension payment by the original due date (3/15 or 4/15, as applicable) to reduce or avoid interest and late-payment penalties. Extensions only protect you from late filing penalties — not from penalties and interest on unpaid balances.
